Today is May 24th, 2022. Another school shooting today. This time at an elementary school. The shooter was wanted for murder in an unrelated case and was being pursued by police when he abandoned his vehicle, ran into an elementary school and just started killing. 14 students dead, 1 teacher and the perpetrator was himself killed.
This angers me to no end. Senseless killings, lives devastated for absolutely nothing. There are lots of questions that will be asked about this such as why wasn’t the school building secured? Why was he able to run inside in the first place? Why was no one armed to return fire? Did they have Active Shooter protocols and were they followed? The one certainty is that the left will use this as a springboard for their gun control agenda.
Here’s the thing. Our rights to own and carry a weapon is enshrined in our founding documents. It is not a privilege granted to us by government, it is our right to carry firearms to protect our homes, schools, places of work, or to protect us from a government that becomes tyrannical. My rights cannot be voted away, executive ordered away, or taken away for any reason, no matter how noble the cause. If the entire country decided that they wanted all guns banned, it wouldn’t matter. Since it is a right, I am a majority of 1 in my life and my rights cannot be taken.
Outlawing firearms is a moot solution since the SCOTUS has already ruled that the second amendment applies to private citizens. Many state constitutions – Kansas included – are much clearer on the language so there is no ambiguity whether citizens are allowed to “keep and bear arms”. We are. It would behoove us as a country to understand that the right to weapons will put inevitably put weapons in the hands of those who abuse their rights as well as those who don’t.
There has to be a solution. We cannot continue creating “safe zones” where it becomes a shooting gallery because the only weapon in sight is in the hands of a murderer. Figure something out that doesn’t involve a constitutional convention, implement it and make these schools safe.
